The term Wellness is all the vibe at this moment in time. Many of us may believe that this is a new concept or a shift in the collective consciousness and for some that may be the case. However, investigating this from the Ayurveda perspective it becomes obvious that this has always been considered an essential guide to living well.
In the Ayurvedic text 'Sushruti Samhita'
Svastha is used to describe health that is truly holistic
Samadoşa samāgni ca sama dhātu malakriyah
Prasanna ātma indriya manah svastha iti abhidhīyate
Sushruti Samhita 15/48.
The word sama is used in the first line of the above quote, it means balanced.
Balanced dosa: Pitta, Kapha , Vata
Balanced agni: Metabolism/digestive fire
Balanced dhatu: Properly formed/balanced tissues
Malakriyah: Proper elimination of wastes i.e urine/stool/sweat etc
The second line uses the term Prasanna which loosely translates as cheerful/content in
Atma: soul
Indriya: Senses, sense organs are smell, taste, sound and sight. Organs of action are hands, feet, speech, genitals and excretory.
Manah: Mind
Svastha: Health
Abhidhiyate: Situated/abiding in
The strong theme that is being referred to here is that without contentment in mind, control of senses, good elimination habits one cannot “abide in health”. Most importantly is the mention on the doshas namely Pitta, Kapha, Vata. Knowledge of these and how it applies to you as an individual in times of day/seasons etc makes Ayurveda a true holistic science.
For knowledge of the doshas and how they apply to you, it is best practice to have a consultation with an Ayurveda practitioner.
