What do I teach?

What I offer is a specialised drawing skills class. To me observation is the keystone of art. Artists usually have a keen sense of sight. They notice things in the world around them that many people walk past such as patterns, shapes in items, by drawing the children develop a keen sense of sight. The hardest challenge the student faces is to look harder and maintain the effort of seeing and interpreting. I will constantly show them the things they have missed and push them through this barrier. I give genuine praise, and I find the strengths in their work and help to build their confidence. That is my main role. It is my job to teach them how to develop artistic sight. Students who are part of a regular art program learn from their artistic mistakes and understand alternative ways of seeing the world around them.

My Goals

Through my class students:

  • develop their imaginative and expressive potential

  • develop skills, techniques and a knowledge of how to put what they see on paper

  • create, and present art works

  • develop an understanding of aesthetics

  • enjoy being creative

Teaching students to keep trying is more beneficial to them than easy praise. Encouragement is the key to promoting a sense of self-esteem and a strong sense of self. Successful experience in all aspects of creative activity and expression depends enormously on confidence. To take on a range of artistic challenges, students need to be supported and encouraged in everything they undertake. Students require growing self-confidence to be willing to expose themselves to different experiences and to openly express their ideas in their artworks.
